While environmentally friendly and natural and organic products are emerging in response to consumer demand, the cosmetics industry has been a late adopter of eco-friendly solutions in terms of packaging. Pibiplast was a pioneer during the first wave of companies transitioning away from highly polluting materials in the 1990s, substituting non-recyclable plastics with recyclable plastics with a better environmental footprint. The Company also took steps to adopt more sustainable materials such as bioplastics and recycled plastics. As a result of its leadership position, Pibiplast has a strong edge compared to the market norm in terms of adoption of highly recyclable products (63% by Pibiplast vs. 28% by the market). In the coming years, Pibiplast aims to accelerate its sustainability roadmap through the development and promotion of innovative packaging solutions based on eco-friendly materials, addressing the increasing demand from customers to reduce their environmental impact.

Restiani is an Energy Service Company (ESCo) focused on delivering energy efficient heating solutions to private customers in the residential market in North West Italy. Services include energy audits, engineering and installation of heating systems, installation of smart meters and maintenance to convey significant energy savings to final users. Restiani finances, out of its own balance sheet, the investment in higher efficiency heating systems and meters by newly acquired customers in exchange of a long term contract. The typical activity of Restiani drives the customer to replace old oil-fueled or gas-fueled boilers with new condensing boilers which bring significant energy saving. Each contract and project drives specific energy saving results, delivering aggregate reduction of c. 1,000 toe of energy consumption and c. 2,500 tons of CO2 emissions per year.

Restiani is a heating management services and energy products provider with headquarters in Alessandria (Italy) and subsidiaries across North West Italy. The company is among the largest in its space with a consolidated and growing portfolio of private clients providing recurrent and resilient revenue streams. Its client base includes c. 1,800 buildings and more than 30,000 apartments, which are directly assisted and served through a proprietary network of technicians providing around the clock availability. Ambienta partnered with the Restiani Family, the original founders, to acquire Restiani as a primary buyout of a non-core asset of TotalErg. Ambienta completed the investment in Restiani in August 2017.

Safim is a leading manufacturer of critical components allowing the safe and energy efficient functioning of hydraulic systems on-board agricultural, construction and material handling vehicles and trailers. Safim components have a tangible positive impact on the environment, by allowing a 40-70% saving in fuel consumption and emissions compared to alternative products. Such savings are delivered by different products including “trailer brake valves” which enable the braking system for trailers on the towing tractor to be activated only when the trailer is present thus avoiding unnecessary energy consumption, “master priority valves” optimizing pressure among different hydraulic circuits thereby delivering a lower energy consumption, and other components preventing potential oil spillages. These products deliver a reduction of c. 2,500 tons of CO2 emissions and c. 2,500 toe of energy consumption per annum, cumulating and growing every year.

Safim is engaged in the design, manufacturing and distribution of mission-critical and highly engineered components for hydraulic systems equipped on off-highway vehicles. The company is based in Modena (Italy), one of the leading districts globally for mechanical engineering, with subsidiaries in the USA, France and India. One of the few companies globally fully focused on these components, Safim is a leading player in its niche, serving premium OEMs like CNH, John Deere, JCB on a global basis. The company operates on different end-markets including agriculture, construction and material handling, which it historically outperformed thanks to its innovative offering and customer centric approach. Ambienta completed an investment in Safim in July 2017.

CAC are a family of high-value and high-performance specialty binders used for their high strength, rapid hardening and heat resistance. CAC based materials are at the base of the success of large, global and fast growing end markets such as building chemistry, refractories and several specialties such as, for example, specialty pipes. In Building Chemistry, the largest end market, CAC is often used in blends with ordinary cement (“OPC”), improving its performance, reducing the needed quantity including, sometimes, even replacing OPC. The effect of such OPC displacement corresponds, for Calucem’s sales only, to a saving of about 250,000 tons of CO2 emission per annum, equivalent, as an example, to the elimination of about 120,000 passenger cars. Furthermore, when used as a binder CAC can replace phenolic resins, a very powerful but highly toxic alternative.

Calucem ranks #2 in the world as a Calcium Aluminate Cements (“CAC”) developer, manufacturer and distributor and is one of only a few competitors with global reach in the sector. Calucem sells in more than 60 countries, with the US and Germany being the largest. As a global player, Calucem operates through an R&D and commercial centre in Mannheim (D), operations in Pula (HR), sales and marketing offices in the US and Singapore, a bauxite quarry near Bodrum (TR) with distribution centers in the US, UK and Sweden. Coatings are widely used in the furniture industry to smoothen the surface and to protect it from harmful substances, abrasion, and UV light. Solvent-borne coatings, however, constitute a potential hazard to both the human health and to the environment, as solvents are pollutants and usually toxic, volatile and flammable. Water-borne coatings, on the other hand, are environmentally friendly and allow the elimination of organic solvents, representing an environmental advantage together with favourable manufacturing characteristics for the furniture industry. Especially for indoor furniture in homes and offices where toxic emissions directly affect humans, the water-borne coatings contribute to a healthier life and cleaner environment.

Oskar Nolte is a leading manufacturer of high performance wood coating and lacquer systems for industrial applications primarily in the furniture industry. The company focuses on water borne and UV coatings, and as such develops, produces and delivers solvent-free coating systems in liquid form to wood panel manufactures.
Due to the elimination of organic solvents, Oskar Nolte saves more than 20,000 thousand tons of solvents per year. From its headquarters and manufacturing site in Germany it delivers its high-performance coatings around the globe.
Ambienta joined Oskar Nolte as a key shareholder in April 2015. In May 2018 Ambienta sold Oskar Nolte to the family owned industrial holding company Peter Möhrle Holding.

IPC is at the forefront of such trend, having developed a number of innovative solutions across its product portfolio that in 2016 enabled energy saved of 19,000 Toe, equivalent to the annual consumption of approximately 360k refrigerators, water saved of 74,000 cubic meters, equivalent to the annual consumption of c.2k cattle, and pollutants avoided for 2,200 tons of emissions from polluting detergents.

IPC is a leading manufacturer of machines and equipment for the professional cleaning industry, ranked as #3 player in the European market and as #1 player by profitability. The company has a full product offering and a resilient business model, operating in a €5bn market with a long-term growth trend. IPC has a strong international footprint with 90% of sales generated outside of Italy, of which a significant portion are outside of Europe. The company manufactures its products in five plants located in the North of Italy and employs over 1,000 people.
Ambienta purchased 100% of the company in July 2014 and completed a strategic add-on acquisition in the UK in July 2016. In April 2017 Ambienta divested its participation through a trade sale to the US listed company Tennant Company.

On highways, speed control solutions promote reduction of the average speed of vehicles, thereby increasing safety and reducing fuel consumption and emissions. In city centers, congestion charge areas reduce urban traffic by incentivizing public transports and, therefore, reduce pollution.

Lakesight Technologies is a buy-and-build platform in the machine vision sector. Machine vision systems are devices for optical sensing that are able to automatically receive and interpret images to control machines or processes in real time. The main application of machine vision is in industrial automation, for process and quality control, representing the key enabling technology for industry 4.0. Another important application is automatic number plate recognition, the enabling technology for intelligent traffic system applications such as enforcement, tolling, vehicle tracking and congestion charge areas. Machine vision is a growing market characterized by extreme fragmentation of suppliers. The platform aims at consolidating into a European platform smaller synergic players that can share sales channels, management resources and growth strategies. The services offered by FoundOcean and CAPE Holland for the stabilisation of offshore structures enable the construction of safe foundations for such installations, being them oil & gas platforms, pipelines or offshore wind farms. A failure on the foundations of such offshore structure can cause oil spillages and have a catastrophic effect on the environment.
CAPE Holland is the pioneer in vibro-piling, a technology that offers substantial environmental advantages vis-à-vis the mainstream impact hammer technology. In fact, CAPE Holland is able to reduce noise emissions by 30-40%, down to a level that is not disturbing for sea life.

FoundOcean Group is an offshore services contractor, offering specialist services for the installation of foundations to the offshore energy sector (offshore oil & gas and offshore wind). The group originated from the offshore grouting business of the UK-based FoundOcean Ltd, founded in 1966 within the British civil engineering group Wimpey Construction, and moved into offshore piling with the acquisition of Netherlands-based CAPE Holland BV in 2014. The product range include towers offering >70% reduction of fuel costs vs. peer products at the same lighting performance, LED based- towers, and a parallel product line of nebulised-water cannons able to abate dust during demolition works, saving up to 90% of the water required compared to traditional watering techniques.
